ROCKET REVIEW: COAL CHAMBER – “Rivals” (CD)

Reunited COAL CHAMBER have dropped a new full length in 2015 entitled “Rivals”. Produced by Mark Lewis, the Nu metal act are back to show they are still relevant in the heavy music game. Led by vocalist Dez Fafara (DEVILDRIVER), the listener will be pleased to hear what they have come up with after a hiatus of thirteen years. The audio chaos begins with tracks “I.O.U. Nothing”, “Bad Blood Between Us”, and “Light in the Shadows”. My favorite track on the entire album comes next in the form of “Suffer In Silence”, featuring a guest by Al Jourgensen. I dig the drumming on this cut by Mike Cox and just the killer groove that they find and stick with. Followed by the slamming “The Bridges You Burn”, “Orion”, and “Another Nail in the Coffin”. Miguel Rascón on guitar offers no real flashy lead playing to speak of, but he certainly knows how to write some hooky riffs. The title track “Rivals” erupts next and does not slow the rocking momentum at all. The next hard hitters “Wait”, the instrumental (mega feedback driven) “Dumpster Dive”, and “Over My Head” do not disappoint. Next up is “Fade Away (Karma Never Forgets)”, probably my second favorite track because it is one of the fastest ones. It all concludes with two par for the course tunes, “Empty Handed” and “Worst Enemy”. While extreme & technical metal fans may not be as into this album, anyone that is more about the alt stuff will want to add this to their collection.
