With their 19th full-length studio release, “Invincible Shield,” JUDAS PRIEST once again cements their place at the pinnacle of heavy metal. Decades into their legendary career, the band proves they still have what it takes to push boundaries, satisfy long-time fans, and ignite the passion of a new generation of metalheads.
From the very first track, “Panic Attack,” listeners are thrown into a storm of blistering guitar riffs courtesy of Richie Faulkner and Glenn Tipton. The unmistakable twin-guitar attack roars with an intensity reminiscent of their iconic albums like Painkiller and British Steel, but with a modern, polished edge that keeps the sound fresh and powerful. The guitar soloing on this cut is out of this world good. Fans are not treated to this sort of thing that often anymore with the new modern metal acts. These metal legends show the kids how it’s done.
Rob Halford, the “Metal God” himself, showcases a vocal range that somehow defies his age. His voice soars through shrieking high notes and deep, resonant growls, adding layers of drama and raw emotion to songs like “The Serpent King” and the abum’s title track.
Among the standout tracks, “Devil in Disguise” is a riff-heavy slammer that feels destined to be a staple in the band’s live set, with its driving rhythm and unforgettable chorus. Meanwhile, “Crown of Horns” and “God is My Witness” continues showcasing the band’s ability to craft evocative melodies without sacrificing their heavy metal essence.
One cannot overlook “Trial by Fire” which is my personal favorite, and offers fans a more modern sounding Priest, that has a more progressive feel but continues to deliver powerfully heavy songwriting. The guitar soloing on this track is stellar.
The production, helmed by Andy Sneap brings a rich, balanced sound to the album, highlighting each member’s technical prowess. The thunderous drums and thundering bass lay a rock-solid foundation for the elaborate guitar work, while Halford’s voice commands attention at every turn. “Sons of Thunder” is a perfect example of how on top of their game this band is. Priest is literally decimating the scene with these crushers.
The next songs “Giants in the Sky” and “Fight For Your Life” keep the momentum going nicely. The album closes out with the solid rockers “Vicious Circle” and the absolutely brilliant “The Lodger.” “Vengeance is mine”, sings Halford in his one-of-a-kind eerie howling voice.
Judas Priest’s “Invincible Shield” is a testament to the enduring spirit of heavy metal. It encapsulates everything fans love about the band: powerful songwriting, skillful musicianship, and a relentless drive to deliver high-octane performances. For those craving an album that embodies both classic and modern metal, this release will more than satisfy.
Whether you’ve been a devoted fan since the ‘70s or are just discovering the might of Judas Priest, “Invincible Shield” serves as a thrilling reminder of why they remain one of metal’s most influential and beloved bands.
Rating: 9/10 – A totally jamming collection of powerful rockers to go with the masterful Judas Priest legacy.
