So many fans have memorable stories to tell about late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Darrell Lance Abbott, but there’s one in particular that somehow even better manages to grab you by the heart, allowing the true character of the man they called “Dimebag” to shine through.
Gary Hayes of Antioch, Tennessee tells that story:
“In 2000, Ozzy played a festival here and Pantera was included. I met Darrell at a guitar shop in Antioch, TN, earlier that day. He was there just looking around as was I. We were all having fun talking and asking him questions, he patiently and knowingly explained everything we asked him. He was interested in everyone’s music no matter what you played.
There was a young man there with his mother and he wanted to learn to begin playing metal music on guitar. He was picking out equipment and his mother was looking sick when she viewed the prices of equipment. Darrell gave the store clerk a blank check and told him to “Give him the works, and I’ll fill it out”!
Without blinking Dimebag spent over $1,200 on a young man he never even knew. He paid for lessons for the child as well…”
If this world had more people like Dime it would be a much better place. Dimebag will never die in our hearts and souls. R.I.P Dime
