KILL DEVIL HILL has unleashed their sophomore record in 2013 entitled “Revolution Rise” via Century Media Records. The lineup again features ex-Pantera bassist Rex Brown and former Dio and Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, along with vocalist Dewey Bragg and guitarist Mark Zavon. This reviewer wasn’t expecting much because I did not get into their debut album from 2012 at all, but I figured I’d give them the benefit of the doubt and see if they had developed more of their own original sound and not keep coming off like some cheap Alice In Chains ripoff.
The album kicks off nicely with the hard rocking “No Way Out” (feat. Zakk Wylde) and then is followed next by the grooving “Crown of Thorns”, “Leave It Behind”, and my personal favorite on the record “Why”. Vocalist Bragg definitely sounds like Layne Staley back from the grave on this cut. But that’s the problem for me, it gets too damn close to sounding like the late great grunge singer for my liking.
I am afraid from this point on the album starts to sound exactly the same as the first four songs. Don’t get me wrong, Rex’s bass sound is killer and the album production is totally stellar, but again, after you get past the first half it all become totally redundant.
