Cape Coral, Florida (USA) melodic metal act EKOTREN are back in 2011 with their second full-length studio album entitled The Dead Of Night via Burnhill Union Records and this reviewer is literally blown away at the vast improvement this musical unit has made since their debut (2008’s Light The Fire via Blind Prophecy Records). Producer Paul Trust (Diecast) wastes no time in getting things rocking off the hook with the hard-hitting “The End Of The Day” and even more powerful “Blackened Sky”. Vocalist John Sheldon puts on one smoking hot vocal performance on both tracks, perfectly tied to some seriously pissed-off guitar work by Keith Finnell. The bouncing low end come by way of Derek DeSantis on bass guitar and the drums are simply crushed by Frank Jargiello. The band’s claim in the media to now be ‘stepping up BPM’s’, along with ‘sharpening riffs’ and delivering ‘throat tearing screams’ has been fully backed up. You get more than that and then some on The Dead Of Night. Other standouts tunes that I was impressed by the most on the album are “Mask Of Lies”, “The Suffering”, and “No Way Out”. EkoTren is definitely one of the more impressive modern metal bands to emerge in the last half of the past decade, and I think even the most jaded and hard to impress music critic will fall in love with these guys… if they’ll just give them a listen.
