TMD has obtained classic concert audio of PANTERA performing “A New Level” during Ozzfest 1997 on June 17 at Polaris Amphitheater in Columbus, Ohio.
The listener is treated to the undisputed raw power of The Cowboys From Hell. Late great guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s guitar wizardry is on full display. More than that, this event would turn out to be quite eventful.
From MTV News: The capacity crowd of 20,000 was less than thrilled with the news that Ozzy himself would not be performing, and about 1,000 of them took their anger out on the venue. Fans smashed box office windows, ripped down panels from a wooden fence, and lit small fires around the amphitheater grounds. According to the “Columbus Dispatch,” the crowd also seriously damaged at least one car, and destroyed trees and fences on neighboring property. This riot resulted in the arrest of 23 attendees.
The PANTERA set was as usual “tight”… during “This Love” there was a stripper who was giving her best dance moves on stage for Philip and had “This Love” painted on her ass cheeks that she proudly flashed for all to see!

In related news, earlier this year a small army of devoted PANTERA fans on Facebook began banding together to ask the legendary Texas groove metal act’s surviving members Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown and Philip Anselmo to play either a one-off show or a series of US shows in memory of Dimebag Darrell, who was shot and killed on stage on Dec 8, 2004 at Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio while playing in his new project DAMAGEPLAN.
The fans specifiy that they are not calling for the band to reform, only to reunite for a single show or single tour.
The fans are making it clear that they do not want the band to attempt to “replace” Dimebag Darrell in any permanent capacity, and are instead suggesting possible guest guitarists to appear on the tour. Comments on the Facebook Cause page seem to favor recruiting former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde to fill in, though the idea of having multiple guest guitarists is also popular.
In May of this year, Zakk Wylde admitted during a radio interview that he would be “Honored” if asked to take part in such an event.
