ROCKET REVIEW: GOATWHORE – “Carving Out The Eyes Of God” (CD)

New Orleans, Louisiana (USA) blackened death metal unit GOATWHORE have unleashed the best album of their career with the Erik Rutan (VITAL REMAINS, CANNIBAL CORPSE) produced “Carving Out The Eyes Of God”, featuring ten wicked as-all-Hades songs that sound like the soundtrack to a person suffering a brutal demise. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the NOLA underground scene has been all but wiped out, but it’s fair to say that the group led by Ben Falgoust (SOILENT GREEN) – who possesses one seriously wretched sounding throat on this album I might add, have truly moved up as the band to beat in underground metal, no matter what state or country you are looking at.

Guitarist Sammy Duet (Ex-ACID BATH) is at his best on the title track “Carving Out The Eyes Of God”, which sounds like he’s playing a buzz saw during the process of removing one’s head. His guitar solo on this song is short, sweet and brilliant. Falgoust yells out: “Bastards of madness, Call out this prayer of vengeance, Speaking to enemies through these wounds of redemption, Tearing out their eyes with horror.”
Now if this material isn’t metal enough for the most jaded of listeners, I don’t know what in God’s name is.

Track four’s “Shadow Of A Rising Knife” is both punk and speed metal derived, showing everyone that they like to keep people guessing at what’s to come next, and I’ve got to say that by the end of the tune, I felt like I’d just spent five minutes having my ass handed to me in some darkened back alley. Zack Simmons (Ex-NACHTMYSTIUM, NECRO YETI) is definitely one of the more talented drummers I have
heard as of late, obviously a student of everything Dave Lombardo and SLAYER. He simply kills the drum kit here and on other pummelers, such as “Apocolyptic Havoc” and “Provoking the Ritual of Death”, the latter of which being my personal favorite on the album.
