Troubled MÖTLEY CRÜE vocalist Vince Neil is notorious for many things, and most of them aren’t good, because usually someone gets seriously injured or killed. The Crue’s former manager Doc McGhee shared disturbing details about a shocking story involving an incident where Vince Neil actually bit the hand of late VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen, believe it or not, while on tour with the legendary guitar wizard. McGhee explains during the discussion the horrifying situation that nearly got the Crue thrown off an early tour where they shared the bill with the mighty VAN HALEN.
“It’s a long story… but they bit Eddie, and then they got into this brawl…” – Doc McGhee
In 1984, the Crue were part of the Monsters of Rock tour alongside VAN HALEN and AC/DC.
For whatever reason, Neil decided to sink his teeth into Van Halen’s hand, a big no-no that could have derailed the Crue’s career.
Check out Doc’s interview via the Rock Experience show below. As the story goes, Tommy Lee claimed this sort of thing was par for the course in the start for the Crue. Yes, the biting phase the band went through was intended to be their way of showing affection to others they loved.
You can’t make this shit up.
This is the same year that Vince Neil would drive drunk and wreck his car, killing his passenger Razzle of HANOI ROCKS, (another musician he loved very much) along with severely injuring two others.
According to UltimateClassicRock site:
Drummer Tommy Lee explained more about the one person who was not a fan of this silly love-bite habit: Eddie Van Halen.
“Vince [Neil] went over and just chomped on Eddie, and Eddie was so mad. He was like, ‘What the fuck is wrong with you?’” Lee recalled of the incident.
Nikki Sixx, the Crue’s bassist, also verified the story is legit several years back, going into more detail:
Nikki: I remember Doc came to us and he goes.
“Good job assholes, I think you’re getting thrown off the Van Halen tour”
Nikki: And were like “why?!”, then we had to stay in our trailers. We weren’t allowed to leave our trailer when Van Halen was walking to the stage (because of Vince Neil biting Eddie).
