Massachusetts metalcore act UNEARTH bring forth Darkness In The Light, their fifth full-length, and this time around the crushing quintet have unleashed their most powerful statement to date, slamming their proverbial fists into the head of the listener, track after track, as if to say “Okay, do you hear us now?”.
My personal favorite of the album’s first half is “Ruination of The Lost”, which is obviously LAMB OF GOD inspired, and features some ferocious drum work by KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s Justin Foley – who replaces Derek Kerswill. Darkness In The Light was also produced by KE’s guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and you can definitely hear how much tighter and fiercer these guys sound thanks to the top notch production, most notably on other slamming tracks that the record offers in the form of “Arise The War Cry”, “The Fallen”, and “Overcome”, showcasing the brutal-as you-need-them-to-be vocals of Trevor Phipps. This reviewer feels this is the best the singer has ever sounded and I really enjoyed the guitar work by Buz McGrath and Ken Susi on the latter song. I’m interested to see where these guys can go next, because – unlike most metalcore bands, this group somehow manages to stay hungry, working harder to get better and better. Yes, you will be wanting to organize a mosh pit upon spinning this bad boy. Unearth does not disappoint on Darkness In The Light. Fans of names like TRIVIUM, MACHINE HEAD and PANTERA will dig this record.
