TMD has obtained extremely rare live audio of METALLICA performing a cover of the MISFITS
song “London Dungeon” on August 24, 1985 at Ruthie’s Inn in Berkeley, California, as part of a secret
gig that was essentially a warm up for their historic “Day on The Green” concert appearance that had the young, rising band sharing the bill with the likes of SCORPIONS, RATT, and Y&T on August 31, 1985 at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA.
On the eve of what would be their biggest moment to date, the legendary act played under the name “The Four Horsemen” at the smallish club venue. Amid their original songs that night, they pulled out this rocking cover in homage to snarling punk/metal icon Glenn Danzig.
This gem is now making its debut on YouTube.
Ruthie’s was located at 2618 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley and raged from 1983-87. To quote from Ruthie’s official bio:
“Many bands played their first gigs at this venue and helped pave the way and supported an incredibly vibrant community of social misfits and serious musicians who had something to say — a great venue that has established itself in the annals of punk and metal history. Wes Robinson, a visionary and infamous promoter, was responsible for providing this venerable nitghtclub to the second wave of new and established punk bands from Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Flipper, MDC and DOA to Code of Honor, Verbal Abuse, Fang, Special Forces, DRI and many others. Later on, this eventually segued into a weekly ritual that showcased such seminal thrash metal bands as Metallica, Slayer, Death Angel, Vio-lence, Megadeth, and Exodus.”
