The Fillmore in NYC was jam-packed on Monday as fans came to catch Chevelle light up the stage on their nonstop headlining jaunt in support of their third major label release, Vena Sera. After 2 Cents and Fair to Midland warmed up the venue, Chevelle slammed the crowd with “Antisaint” and “Brainiac” from Vena Sera, inciting rabid fan reactions from the start.
It had been almost 8 years since I had last seen Chevelle, when the brothers Loeffler, appearing as juvenile and slovenly as most of the audience members, opened up a radio festival off of their indie effort, Point #1. 3 records and hundreds of shows later, Chevelle threw down an impressively tight and energetic set– no pyro, no stage props, no flair, just three wiry guys and some lights.
Their set kept fans and diehards afloat, ranging from deep cuts like “SMA” and “Sleepwalking Elite” to singalong smashes like “Closure” and “I Get It.” Featuring the Loefflers’ brother-in-law Dan Bernardini on bass, the brotherly trio blasted the crowd with headbanger “Forfeit” and with a swift kick to the mic stand, Chevelle put an end to their highly kinetic show.
