TMD salutes the greatest heavy metal bassist of all time, Cliff Burton of METALLICA, who lost his life while touring with the band in Sweden on September 27, 1986. Cliff was only 24 years old.
Cliff was recently ranked number five by Music Radar in their poll of ‘Top 25 Bassists’ of rock history.
Here’s what Randy “Rocket” Cody of THE METAL DEN had to say about his hero Cliff Burton:
“You all certainly speak of the elite bass players of all time, so that in itself is really cool to see. There are so many ranging from in rock and out of rock that rank at the top for me, legendary bass titans like Jaco, JPJ, Clarke and Wooten, for sure. However, in my humble opinion, the greatest bass guitar player of them all was a cat named Cliff Burton. With what he possessed in style, speed and originality in music composition during his brief time in one of the all-time highest selling rock acts ever, Metallica, simply dwarfs any of the men I mentioned at the start. I like to imagine that if Jaco plugged in on the stage with Cliff one night to trade half hour solos that came off the top of their heads, that Burton would have easily ‘out created’ the music great without even a flinch! There will NEVER be anyone better than Cliff Burton on bass… ever. If you need any proof, just go listen to Metallica’s (Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth!!”
