TMD unearths the holy grail for KISS fans. “Smoke” is a NEVER BEFORE RELEASED OR CIRCULATED demo by the legendary rock act circa the 1970’s, believed to be cut in and around the same time as Rock and Roll Over – which itself was released in November 11, 1976, and recorded in September ’76. The listener is in for a real treat. The song is the Stones “Jumpin Jack Flash” meets “Mr.Speed”. It’s unmistakably KISS, but upon first listen, you can easily understand why they could never release this track without being sued by the Stones, for it has completely lifted the riff and vocal line of ‘JJF’. What makes it even more unique, however, is that Stanley and Simmons also sing it in total Stones fashion. It truly is a special moment in rock history and has to be heard to be believed.

I love it. I’m a HUGE KISS fan. I love the old demo’s. Doncha Hesitate should have been on on album and so should have this song. KISS does not get the recognition they deserve. WE THE PEOPLE WANT KISS IN THE HALL OF FAME. WE WANT KISS! WE WANT KISS. WE WANT KISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t see how this is as much a rip of “JJF” as I thought “Makin’ Love” (off the same album!) was a bigger rip of “Whole Lotta Love” by Zep. “Smoke” is much closer to “Mr Speed” than the Stones…..actually, The Kinks’ “Catch Me Now I’m Falling” rips off “JJF” more than this does! Wish we got more demos on that 2000 box set.; I am all for hearing more of what this band was doing back then!
I don’t think it has ANYTHING to do with sounding like Jumping Jack Flash!!! But it DOES have some ‘Stones influence NO DOUBT!! I would think it would have been safe to release with no law suits. IT SOUNDS GREAT!!! I LOVE THIS ERA OF KISS!!!!
Interesting little gem, but Im sorry you can definetly hear the Stones riff in there, but still pretty cool nonetheless.
My wife and I just had our 21st wedding anniversary today. Been a Kiss fan since I was 7 years old. I’m so happy to hear this cool song from the greatest band on earth (today). What a great gift for us! That being said, I don’t think this song rips off anything I’ve heard by the stones or anybody for that matter. Sounds like a good ol’ Kiss tune to me. I wish people had more respect for a band that NEEDS TO BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! I’m going to continue to call it the Rock and Roll Hall of SHAME until these pinheads get it right and give credit & respect to the greatest rock and roll band of all time. Period.
I LOVE the gritty Simmons/Stanley edge to this song backed up by the old school Frehley guitar & Criss thump. This is just another example of their versatility, creativity, & talent. They can rock, pop, or metal it up. I don’t hear JJF in here as much as I hear classic rock meets mid-seventies rock and roll. It’s pure KISS, make no mistake. LOVE it! Oh and by the way, I am going to see KISS on 07/30 at Riverbend Ampitheatre—YEA!
