ROCKET REVIEW: KORN – “KORN III: Remember Who You Are” (CD)

Nu metal sensation KORN have fallen way off course from their monstrous self-titled debut in 1994. Since losing their drummer David Silveria and second guitarist Brian “Head” Welch in recent years, it seems the band has all but come to a literal screeching halt. This time out (their ninth studio effort to date) they went back to the drawing board by kicking out Pro Tools and returning to the guy who produced their first two records, Ross Robinson. They even allowed talented touring drummer Ray Luzier a crack at recording with them. How are the results you ask? Well, while I don’t think “Oildale (Leave Me Alone)” or “Pop A Pill” are horrible songs, I’m afraid the rest of the album sounds like it’s trying way too hard to recapture the early ‘angriness’ that helped them become millionaires to begin with. The band talks in the media about “resurrecting that vintage Korn sound” – and how they are so committed to getting back to their greatness. Perhaps they should have accepted “Head” back into the fold – if that’s truly what they were going for.

KORN III just doesn’t deliver anything remotely as brilliant or rocking as past KORN classics like “Blind” or “A.D.I.D.A.S.”. In fact, they are so far away from being that first KORN band we all fell in love with, that really… it’s sad to hear. Like a prize fighter who went one too many rounds past his peak, that’s exactly the way I feel listening to Davis, Fieldy and Munky struggling around in lame duck after lame duck throughout KORN III. I think the band needs to take some advice from the album’s title, yup… I said it: you dudes need to remember who you are.
