Frank “Killjoy” Pucci, founder and lead vocalist of Ohio death metal act, NECROPHAGIA, has passed away at the age of 49. The band issued the following statement:
“We are so shocked and saddened to bring you the news of our dear brother Killjoy passing away this morning. We are at a loss for words. R.I.P brother you are forever in our hearts. We will cherish our moments together forever.”
Formed in 1983, the band broke up in 1987, reformed in 1997 and subsequently released a handful of records, including three that featured Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo on guitar. Their most recent album, WhiteWorm Cathedral, was released in 2014 via Season Of Mist.
Necrophagia was one of the first death metal bands. The band was assembled in Wellsville, Ohio in 1983. Their name derives from the act of cannibalizing, or eating a corpse. The word derives from the two Greek words nekron (corpse) and phagein (to eat).
Necrophagia was a popular group in the underground “tape trading” scene of the early-to-mid-1980s. Featuring hard-driving metal and growling vocals, Necrophagia became a pioneer in the fledgling extreme metal genre. Their first full-length album, Season of the Dead, was recorded and released in 1987.
