Original BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward was hospitalized this weekend with heart problems, prompting Ward to cancel a West Coast tour with his current band, Day Of Errors.
Ward issued the following statement:
“I wound up in hospital this past weekend with heart problems. I am okay and in good recovery at this time. However, I’ve never experienced this particular type of heart problem before, and due to its nature, I had to make the decision to cancel the dates.
“I want to send my sincere apologies to everyone who was planning to come out to the shows. I’m so sorry we won’t be making it — I was looking forward to seeing you all and sharing this music with you.
“I’ll be in touch soon.”
Black Sabbath has been so influential in the development of heavy metal rock music as to be a defining force in the style. The group took the blues-rock sound of late ’60s acts like Cream, Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge to its logical conclusion, slowing the tempo, accentuating the bass, and emphasizing screaming guitar solos and howled vocals full of lyrics expressing mental anguish and macabre fantasies. If their predecessors clearly came out of an electrified blues tradition, Black Sabbath took that tradition in a new direction, and in so doing helped give birth to a musical style that continued to attract millions of fans decades later.
