ROCKET REVIEW: CANNIBAL CORPSE – “A Skeletal Domain” (CD)

American death metal legends CANNIBAL CORPSE have unleashed their thirteenth studio album in 2014 entitled “A Skeletal Domain”. Produced by Mark Lewis, the sonic chaos kicks off with the blast beat fury of “High Velocity Impact Spatter”. This song will slam you to the back of your seat, moving like an out of control car that ultimately launches off a cliff to its doom. Vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher sounds even more psycho than he did on 2012’s “Torture”. How is that even possible? This riffs are fast and fucking furious, thanks to the unholy guitar team of Pat O’Brien and Rob Barrett. Up next is “Sadistic Embodiment” and this shit kicker will tear your face off and make you want to pour salt on your open wounds it is that devastating. But my favorite comes with track three’s totally brutal “Kill or Become”.

The rhythm section of Alex Webster on bass and Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums is just a wonderous thing to behold. Point blank, this is some of the heaviest drumming I have heard in quite some time. When that is what first stands out to you when you listen to a metal song then it tells you just how powerful that musician is. The death ride does not slow down, thankfully. The title track next rips it up, followed by the murderous sounding “Headlong into Carnage” and rampaging “The Murderer’s Pact”. Track seven’s “Funeral Cremation” is another one of my personal favorites, delivering chills up my back with every skull slamming beat. Track eight’s “Icepick Lobotomy” has a cool groove and “Vector of Cruelty” simply destroys.

The album concludes with the final three ‘solid as all hell’ cuts “Bloodstained Cement”, “Asphyxiate to Resuscitate”, and “Hollowed Bodies”. Any fan of extreme metal will want to own this album. It’s pretty much one of the heaviest damn albums I have heard all year.
