Today marks what would have been late great PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s 47th birthday. Darrell Lance Abbott was born on August 20, 1966 in Ennis, Texas. His impact on the world of heavy metal music is still felt in a big way each and every day since he was murdered on the stage in Columbus, Ohio at the Alrosa Villa on December 8, 2004. A crazed former Marine stormed the stage and shot Dime in the head at point blank range in front of the stunned live crowd. Several others in the club that night – trying to help save the guitar legend – lost their lives with Dime. A police officer would eventually kill the gunman and put an end to the darkest event in music history.
Diehard fans in recent years have called for the surviving members (Vinnie, Phil and Rex) to reunite for a reunion concert with Zakk Wylde filling in for brother Dime.
“It’s not replacing anybody. You’re talking about Dime. It’s like Rhoads. You’re celebrating his greatness.” – Zakk Wylde on PANTERA reunion
Zakk said it best about the potential event, that does not seem to be happening anytime soon due to the fact that Vinnie Paul holds a grudge vs. Phil and Rex.
In the end, the metal world will never forget the accomplishments by Dimebag and his incredible guitar talents. Hopefully, sooner than later, this reunion concert will take place in his honor because he certainly deserves that recognition from his former band mates and everyone that fell in love with CFH.
