American thrashers HAVOK hail from the cannabis-legal confines of Denver, Colorado and are led by guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez. Formed in 2004, the band is a leader of the New Wave of Thrash Metal and have toured with Sepultura, Death Angel, and 3 Inches Of Blood. The lineup behind Sanchez currently consists of Mike Leon (bass), Pete Webber (drums), and Reece Scruggs (lead guitar). After a series of EP’s and a couple well received studio albums “Burn” in ’09 and “Time Is UP” in ’11, they are back and more vicious than ever with the recent release of “Unnatural Selection” in 2013, which has broken the Billboard Top 200 chart for the first week sales.

The Metal Den’s Randy “Rocket” Cody has conducted an EXCLUSIVE interview with HAVOK frontman David Sanchez for TMD’s loyal following of DEN HEADZ all across the globe!

ROCKET: So let me first ask…. where were you born and raised?

DAVID: I was born in Georgia but I grew up my whole life in Colorado.

ROCKET: When did you first start playing guitar and singing?

DAVID: I started playing the guitar when I was thirteen. After playing a year and a half we couldn’t find anybody to sing so I just said I’ll give it a shot… and here I am.

ROCKET: Do you recall your first HEAVY METAL concert?

DAVID: The first metal show I ever went to was with Scorpions, Whitesnake and Dokken.

ROCKET: Let’s talk about the new HAVOK album ‘Unnatural Selection’. Where was it recorded and who produced it?

DAVID: It was produced by myself and the band. We tracked the drums at Gothic theater in Colorado and the rest of it was tracked in my home studio.

ROCKET: How long did the recording process take?

DAVID: We probably tracked for three or four weeks. You know, there’s more… you gotta track the drums, edit, do guitars, this that and the other thing.

ROCKET: How long was the writing process?

DAVID: We had three months off in-between touring and so we wrote it all during that time.

ROCKET: You guys are signed with Candlelight records. How’s that been working out?

DAVID: This is actually our last album with Candlelight and then we will be free agents. But yeah, they’ve treated us very well!

ROCKET: I love the new music and my review is posted at TMD’s site for everyone to check out. How has the response been so far out at the shows for the new material?

DAVID: The response from the fans has been really great and most the reviews so far are good.

ROCKET: It’s a slamming album, dude! What kind of guitars are you currently playing live and in the studio?

DAVID: I play ESP’s and EMG pickups and Ernie Ball strings.

ROCKET: You’ve opened for the likes of Anthrax, Sepultura, Death Angel…. so I wanted to ask who have you learned from the most?

DAVID: We’ve learned a lot from everybody of what to do and what not to do.

ROCKET: Who are some of the other underground thrash metal bands in your area of Denver that have impressed you?

DAVID: No, not really. There’s not much for thrash. There’s a cool band Speedwolf that is like a thrashy Motorhead.

ROCKET: I see on your upcoming tour schedule you guys are playing near me in Dallas, TX but not Ft. Worth. Why is that? Ft. Worth is the city where Pantera and Rigor Mortis got started. You need to be playing The Rail club, brother!! That’s where the real metal thrashers will turn up.

DAVID: Our schedule is pretty slammed already so I doubt we’ll be able to do that but someday I am sure we will play in Ft. Worth.

ROCKET: Lastly, where do you see yourself in ten years from now?

DAVID: Balding. (Laughs) No, ten years from now I definitely see us still touring and hopefully playing in front of bigger crowds.

ROCKET: Thanks for rocking this out with me, brother! Best of luck with your music and if you come out to Ft Worth and play I will definitely come out and review a show! Any final words for your fans?

DAVID: I’d like to personally thank anyone that has come out to a show and bought a CD… told a friend about us. Cause without those people we wouldn’t exist. For everybody else, support music and think for yourself, because if you do those two things the world will be a way better place.
