TMD has obtained the earliest known concert recording of VAN HALEN performing “Summertime Blues”, originally recorded by Eddie Cochran. Rock historians point out that this was one of the first shows the legendary rockers played after being signed to Warner Brothers in October of 1977.
The gig was in Valencia, California at Magic Mountain theme park during that same year. They performed two sets. Though some point to the date being the 1st of October – it has never been confirmed. It is not yet known which set this recording comes from.
The listener will hear the original lineup of VH (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Michael Anthony) strutting their stuff on this classic tune that features some blazing fretboard moments from Eddie that needs to be heard to be believed. He was certainly ‘erupting’ his shredding talents straight out the gate. Many famous rock acts over the years have covered this song, including The Who, Blue Cheer and Rush… but nobody has as much fun with it as Eddie and the boys.
