Ex-MÖTLEY CRÜE Singer John Corabi recently addressed how Nikki Sixx might be using backing tracks while speaking to Cassius Morris. After discussing Mick Mars’ legal feud with the Crüe, the host asked Corabi whether it was possible that Sixx was using backing tracks. The singer replied:
“Yeah, I mean, nowadays recording on Pro Tools [is easy]. If you said to me, like, because I released a couple of songs a little bit ago, if you said to me, ‘Hey, can you just give me the rhythm guitar track?’ I could literally just go online, highlight that track and email you just that track.”
This is called a production ‘stem’ and this allows the sound engineer working the audio mixer (sound board), where the stems can be run out of the PA system’s speaker setup layering over any other ‘backing tracks’ for other instruments on the stage and vocals, mixing with any real live instruments and singing.

He added, clarifying:
“So, as far as the drums go or any of that stuff nowadays with computers and all that sh*t; it’s possible.”
When the host asked whether Mötley used backing tracks while Corabi was touring with them, the rocker had a confession to make:
“We did use tracks. I’ll say that right now, we used; but we were using some backing vocal tracks and we used for the song ‘Misunderstood.’ There was a 53-piece orchestra on that track. We just used the orchestra tracks to enhance what we were doing live on stage.”
The ‘backing tracks’ controversy heated up when Carmine Appice backed up Mick Mars’ claims about Sixx’s live bass playing. The Mötley Crüe bassist then replied to these claims and dismissed them, but also confirmed that he had taken bass lessons to improve his performances.
