Industry Source: PANTERA’s Final Album Was “Recorded by Dimebag and Vinnie Paul” in Hopes of Squashing Old Feud

An industry source has tipped off TMD that late PANTERA founding members Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell Abbott had decided that when recording the last songs Dime cut that were meant for a second Damageplan album, the brothers talked it out and instead decided to use the tracks for a final Pantera studio release, knowing full well that there was no guarantee a full on reunion (including world tour) with estranged band mates Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo would have ever materialized. This means no more Damageplan and only Pantera full steam ahead. That was the Abbott brother’s mindset.

Dimebag’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney says that Dimebag was not happy with Damageplan before he died, and voiced his distrust of singer Pat Lachman, who was initially against singing any Pantera songs at Damageplan gigs, believe it or not.

“You’re going to sing those songs, dude!” an angry Dimebag demanded, and while Lachman appeased the metal guitar giant, there was more dirt lurking in his closet that was yet to be exposed.

“He was not the person we thought he was,” says Rita Haney.

According to the source close to Pantera’s camp, “Vinnie and Dime recorded pretty much an album’s worth of material together near the end of Darrell’s life, that is all completed. Recorded at Dimebag’s home studio located in Dalworthington Gardens. It is the guitar and drums only. It’s damn heavy. They were planning on bringing in Rex and Phil to cut the bass and vocals because these are definitely Pantera songs. The brothers had a commitment to bringing Pantera back in a real way. The band’s producer/engineer Sterling Winfield is in possession of the 6 to 8 songs today that were recorded by the brothers.”
