OZZY – ‘Pete Way, Cocaine & Pissing On A Restaurant Table’

There is a reason they call OZZY a rock and roll legend. We all know about the famous incident where he pissed all over the Alamo in Texas. Yes, apparently, peeing on things in public goes hand in hand with being the Godfather of heavy metal music.

Pete Way, bassist with one of Britain’s most long respected hard-rock bands UFO, has written a new book which covers his career alongside Iron Maiden and Motley Crue, his harrowing heroin addiction. He also recounts a hilarious tale of the Prince of Darkness… going off the deep end when he felt he was being harassed while eating out together at a restaurant, so he took matters into his own ‘hands’ like only OZZY can.

In the book, Way describes taking cocaine with Ozzy – who nicknamed it “waffle dust” – passing out on stage. But one of the most incredible stories is the lunch out with Ozzy and wife Sharon Osbourne when they asked him to tour with Ozzy’s band.

He recalls it in the book: “To this day, I’m asked more than anything if Ozzy is as wild as he has appeared. “The answer to that question is an absolute yes, he is and he does not give a f**k.

“A perfect example of that occurred at what I suppose you could say was my job interview.

“Ozzy had a UK tour looming and right before it kicked off, he and Sharon invited me out to lunch at a very exclusive restaurant in Mayfair that they then patronised.

“Allow me to set the scene. Sat at the table opposite us were two well-to-do-looking businessmen, while at our table Ozzy was holding court in his own inimitable and very loud way. At a certain point, one of the business men leaned over, attracted Ozzy’s attention and said to him: “Excuse me, but really, would you mind toning your language down?”

“My immediate thought was that Ozzy was bound to retort, but he didn’t, or at least not right away. He simply sat back in his seat and perused the menu. This was unusual for him and it felt to me as though we had dodged a bullet.

“The two businessmen returned to their lunch and Ozzy, Sharon and I passed the next couple of minutes in uneventful silence.

“And then, still without having uttered a word, Ozzy stood up.

“He smoothed out the creases in his trousers and walked over to where the businessmen were sat, whereupon he climbed up onto their table, pulled his pants down and pissed all over their food.

“His two victims were outraged. One sat with his mouth hanging open, face beetroot-red, while the other dashed off to fetch the maitre d’.

“Even before Ozzy was sat back down at our table, Sharon had got her cheque book out of her handbag and was writing out a cheque in an off-hand manner that indicated to me that she was more than used to such incidents.”

Way, now 65, parted company with Ozzy and his band at the end of the tour.

His book A Fast Ride Out of Here – Confessions of Rock’s Most Dangerous Man, published by Little Brown, is out on May 11.
