The veteran rock and metal bass player Jimmy Bain, best known for his work with DIO and RAINBOW, as well as THIN LIZZY, has passed away at the age of 68 according to his friends. He was most recently involved in the band, Last In Line, which featured fellow Dio alumni Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice, who will release their debut album, “Heavy Crown” on February 20th.

Bain was born in Newtonmore, Scotland and made his presence known first with Rainbow, with whom he recorded the album “Rising” and the live releases, “On Stage” and “Live in Germany,” before joining Thin Lizzy, performing on the “Black Rose: A Rock Legend” record, as well as contributing significantly to Thin Lizzy mastermind Phil Lynott’s solo material. After working with Gary Moore and forming his own band, Wild Horses, he joined forces with former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio to help form the singer’s eponymous band, and remained a member throughout the eighties, rejoining at the beginning of the millenium to record the albums, “Magica” and “Killing the Dragon.”

Motorhead’s Phil Campbell has paid tribute, saying: “Jimmy Bain was a true musician and songwriter. He was involved and wrote more than you probably imagine.”

Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine says: “I’m saddened by the loss of my friend. Godspeed!”

Former Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich added: “Jimmy Bain was a sweet soul. God Bless him. Rest now, brother.”
