GLOBAL METAL

TMD Rocks!

Global Metal touches upon the controversy around Slayer's legendary Reign In Blood opener, 'Angel Of Death' and how the song is viewed by metalheads around the world, particularly Israel.

"For me growing up, 'Angel Of Death' was always such a controversially song, but such a great song," says Dunn. "A really iconic song – it blew the doors off anything that had been done before in terms of the intensity of the song and the lyrical content. Just the overall ferocity of that song and that album – we went into the stratosphere with that record. The question about the Holocaust and that song is a burning question for a lot of metalheads. It was a great thing for us to have the opportunity to ask kids who had grown up in Israel, who had parents or grandparents who were killed or affected by the Holocaust and what they thought about this song. We felt that that was an overdue question. Nobody had ever taken the time to do that. We were fascinated to discover that in large part they realized that it was a song, a commentary. They interpreted it as a testament to the atrocity and not as some kind of endorsement by any means. We just felt it was a proper time to tackle that. It was something we needed to address. It was like with Headbanger's Journey, going to Norway and not talking about the church burnings. It would've been the same if we had gone to Israel and not talked about 'Angel Of Death'.

Global Metal opens in Toronto, ON and Vancouver, BC on Friday, June 20.
