Recorded at Abyss Studio with the legendary Swedish producer Peter Tägtgren – aka “The Rick Rubin of Scandinavian Metal”, this modern thrash unit continues to step up their game in follow-up to 2011’s absolutely brilliant “Lost In Violence”. Lasse Skov is again a total standout on vocals and guitar, clearly bringing to mind a young James Hetfield, yet standing his ground with his own deafening vocal roar. The listener is treated to one of the more powerful rhythm sections going today, anchored down by bassist Rasmus Kalke and Nikolaj Kjärgaard on drums. Guitarist Mark Drastrup shreds it up with great passion.

My personal favorites are track four’s “For The Fallen”, that finds Skov shouting: “We don’t take shit, so you better think twice…”, and track seven’s “Dark Matter”, clearly the most extreme sounding cut on the album. The guitar solo on this track is a great one that helps take the song to a new level. But the most important thing is that it is unrelenting in its sonic savagery. This band knows how to keep the fans coming back for more, which is the most important thing when trying to build your name in such an over crowded worldwide metal scene. Essence is the real deal for me and its only a matter of time before everyone else catches on.

In the end, I feel any fan of old school and modern thrash will want to add “Last Night of Solace” to their collection, and mark my words this band is going to get much bigger in the next five to ten years. With a group of musicians this hard working and talented it is scary to think of what kind of legacy they will ultimately leave behind themselves.

ROCKET REVIEW
[starreview tpl=16]
ESSENCE – “Last Night Of Solace” (CD)
(Noise Art Records/2013)

1.
