\nDorset, England doom metal legends, ELECTRIC WIZARD, recorded 2011’s “Black Masses” at Toerag Studios in London. The album was produced by Liam Watson and certainly does have an eerie early<\/em> BLACK SABBATH vibe that I feel gives the – at times amateurish production – a much needed lift. The opening track “Black Mass” is a pure stoner metal ride filled with the haunted sounding voice of guitarist\/lead vocalist Jus Oborn. Track two’s “Venus In Furs” starts with a horror-movie type scream and finds the group coming off very much old school garage rock<\/em>, almost as if they’d stepped out of a time machine from the year 1967. I think Electric Wizard is the kind of band the Jimi Hendrix would have definitely liked. They know how to kick out a solid psychedelic groove and stick with it… and that’s what has truly always made Rock n Roll go round: a good groove… one that makes your knee start going up an down<\/em>. “Night of Child” and “Patterns of Evil” made me feel like I need to go start a cult that only listens to Electric Wizard… come to think of it, this band sounds like something Geezer Butler would have been involved in had there been no Black Sabbath, because it’s just got that neat ‘Let’s create a love child in your bell-bottoms and boots kind of thing’ going on for it. I give it two enthusiastic horns up and look forward to this band’s future output. Buy this record, put flame to some candles in the room, turn out the lights and then just listen to the utter brilliance that is Electric Wizard.
