Review By Rocket
It’s no shocker that the utterly face-crushing debut effort from instrumental prog/death metal project Blotted Science, featuring legendary Watchtower guitarist Ron Jarzombek, Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster and drummer Charlie Zeleny (Behold The Arctopus) turns out to be one of metal’s finest achievements in ’07, sending fair warning to the wide field of more gimmicky, pop-driven metal groups of today, such as Avenged Sevenfold, that true musical substance will always win out in the end with the most devoted metal music lover. It has been mentioned that Zeleny is actually the third drummer for the recording lineup here, replacing past members Chris Adler (Lamb Of God) and Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal). Much like the earlier ’07 released Devin Townsend “Ziltoid the Omniscient” wonder work, this is clearly an album where you can picture the mastermind behind it all simply being a kid with his “picking” hand stuck deep inside the proverbial cookie jar. From the technically, nightmare’ish opener: Synaptic Plasticity, that immediately shows off Jarzombek’s amazing ‘shred-your-face’ playing facility, along with an uncanny ability to scarily morph notes from the strings into wrecking ball-riffs and laser precise, mind-altering solos, to the climatic ending of: Adenosine Buildup, it’s safe to say that the overall brilliance of Machinations of Dementia will be talked about for years to come.
