Toronto-based symphonic metal act OPERUS will have the honor of supporting a pair of dates for one of the genre’s top bands on January 26th and 30th, when they will open for Rhapsody (on their 20th Anniversary/Farewell Tour) at the Expo Chihuahua in Chihuahua and Circo Volador in Mexico City, respectively. Additionally, the band will be performing two shows – January 27th at Bar Hysteria, Ciudad Juarez (with Nostra Morte) and January 28th at Cosa Nostra, Mexico City (headlining show).
“For Operus, this is an opportunity we have been waiting for,” says bassist Wojciech Sokolowski. “It’s a chance for us to showcase what the potential of this band really is. We couldn’t have asked for a better mass audience to perform for as the musical inspirations of Rhapsody are in more ways than one very similar to those of Operus. We are humbled yet very excited to perform for the Mexican audiences and can’t wait to do what we love in front of a bigger crowd”.
Operus will be supporting their debut album, ‘Cenotaph’ (which was issued on October 13th, via Dark Star Records in Association with MVD Entertainment and The Orchard/SONY). “’Cenotaph’ is a commemoration of writers and poets who never gained the recognition and or lived to see the impact of their work,” explains the band. “The concept and inspiration for the title of the album is taken from a statue in Budapest located opposite of Vajdahunyad Castle, Anonymous, the unknown chronicler at the court of King Béla III. The lyrical concepts are not that of any one specific idea but rather a mosaic of different stories and legends which are meant to paint images in the minds of the listener, much like the tales laid by the quills of writers long ago.” The album can be ordered via this link: https://darkstarrecords.net/artists/operus
“Musically, the concept of Cenotaph has a very cinematic sound to it that emphasises the classical elements of the band, such as the cello and the classical guitar. Vocally, Cenotaph moves between intimate textures such as the ones heard in ‘Wretched Play’ and big ensemble arrangements form choirs to accents with screams such as the ones in title track. The album is packed with counterpoint sections in each song, rather than using the most common approach to music as is harmony.”
